by James Lee Burke
Billy Bob Holland, a former Texas Ranger, travels to Montana for some fishing. There he meets with old buddy Doc Voss and Doc's daughter Maisey. Soon a frightening cast of characters gathers in Big Sky Country either by accident or intent. Sociopath Wayne Dixon, a released felon who blames Holland for his sister's death, comes to the area. Tagging along with Dixon is Terry, a cold-blooded killer. Xavier Girard, a drunken author who has a wife with a chemical problem, prowls the bars. Added to these dangerous characters is Nicki Molinari, a gangster with mob connections who has federal agents shadowing his actions. A showdown in a bar ticks off the local bikers and the body count starts to rise and rise quickly. Murder, haunting guilt, double-crossing and gritty realism are traits of James Lee Burke's books. This modern Western will not disappoint Burke's many fans.
